Trail Safety

Common misunderstandings:

  • All ATV - UTV operators born after Jan 1, 1988, must have taken the ATV safety class.
  • All riders under 18 must wear a DOT helmet. Bicycle helmets are not acceptable.
  • ATV’s headlights must be on at ALL times.
  • Passengers are only allowed on machines sold as 2 person machines.
  • ATV drivers must be at least 12 and have completed ATV safety class.
  • UTV drivers must be at least 16 years old and have completed safety class.
  • You may not ride on or in ditches of any state roads (numbers roads, like 70,51,47) unless specifically marked ATV route
  • Any lights including whip lights, can only display white, yellow, or amber - forward and red - backwards while operating.    This means any colored lights are not legal on the trail or roadway.

Trail Ambassadors - John & Roylene Knudsen

What is a Trail Ambassador?

The Wisconsin Trail Ambassador Program is a volunteer program that helps with trail safety and maintenance:

  • Responsibilities

Trail ambassadors patrol trails, perform safety inspections, staff welcome centers, and report dangerous conditions. They also educate trail users, provide minor aid in emergencies, and offer information on responsible use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs).

  • Partnerships

The program works with the US Forest Service, Wisconsin DNR, Wisconsin DOT, county agencies, and local organizations.

  • Training

Trail ambassadors undergo online classroom training and hands-on field day training. Required courses include First Aid/CPR and radio communications.

  • Benefits

The program helps increase participation in OHV clubs, improves safety for other users, and establishes a positive image for the sport in the community.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers funding opportunities to organizations that recruit and train trail ambassadors.
